When we start to make something explicit and bring it to consciousness, we’re doing what the universe itself does, and something in us thrills to this and is reinforced by it… You and I know more than we can tell. Life is lived out of this tacit knowing. But what helps, and is often crucial, is to make what is tacit, explicit. To make the implicit, explicit. And in doing that, we enact what the universe itself is doing, and everybody can do that. The divinity which is implicit was implicit at the big bang, is made explicit in the course of time. The picture gets richer and richer and richer about what is blossoming in us. Again, making explicit what’s implicit.

A very big part of individual and collective evolution and development has to do with the way we understand our experience and the way we interpret our experience. There’s a very big difference between the experience of intensity, no matter what kind of intensity it is, and actually understanding what it is that’s happening to us. As our own interest in the human experience deepens, and we become interested in the philosophical and spiritual context of our own experience and of the human experience, that interest will have a dramatic effect on the way we interpret the experience that we’re actually having. The bigger the philosophical and spiritual context, the bigger the context we have on our experience. That means the way we interpret it is going to change. It’s going to deepen, it’s going to become more profound.

A human being is part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe’; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest—a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion… is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison.

Stainproof Your Mind

Recognizing the power of our minds means that even as unfortunate or terrible things happen to us, we can receive them in a more spacious and ultimately more enlightened way. The Buddha taught his students to develop a power of love so strong that the mind becomes like space that cannot be tainted. If someone throws paint, it is not the air that will change color. Space will not hold the paint; it will not grasp it in any way. Only the walls, the barriers to space, can be affected by the paint. ...

An Exercise

Have you ever had a longing to be with someone you love? Your significant other, your family, or friends? I think it’s safe to say that we’ve all been there a time or two (or 3 thousand). I had an experience recently that really got me thinking about a new spin (to me at least) on the present. I was dancing with my girlfriend at my place and was having an amazing time. I started to imagine that it was many years later and I was remembering this moment from that point in time. It brought such a ...
